Best AI Receptionist for Small Business 2026: Picks by Call Volume, Priced

Published · prices checked October 26, 2026

Key takeaways

  • Ten AI receptionists with published prices cost $129 to $695.30 a month at 13 three-minute calls a day (prices checked October 26, 2026).
  • The lowest cost at 3 calls a day is not the lowest at 13. Upfirst leads at 3 a day, Goodcall at 13, and the two swap at about 144 calls a month.
  • Rosie costs less than NextPhone up to about 334 calls a month; past that, NextPhone costs less, and its bill does not move again.
  • Smith.ai can hand a call to its own live receptionists, at $3.00 a call when used, on top of its per-call rate.
  • Picks are earned by a published price at a named volume or a quoted term. There is no best overall.

As of October 26, 2026, the ten AI receptionists in our table cost $129 to $695.30 a month at 13 three-minute calls a day. At 3 a day they cost $59.95 to $199. No single one is best for every small business. Which wins depends on how many calls you get, how long they run and what happens when you go over.

Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls over 30 days. Goodcall bills per unique caller; we count every call as a new caller. Taxes, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.

Rows are ordered by cost at 13 calls a day. At that volume Goodcall costs the least of the vendors with a published price, and Smith.ai's AI Receptionist the most. At 3 a day Upfirst costs the least and NextPhone the most. Every billing model in the table is explained on AI receptionist cost.

How we picked

A pick has to be earned by a number we can print or a term we can quote. We used four tests:

  1. A published price at 3, 5 and 13 calls a day. Each vendor's cheapest plan for the volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. A vendor with no price past its entry plan keeps its row, and the gaps show.
  2. What a busy month does. The "If calls double" column, and the vendor's own rule for going past the allowance: a rate, an automatic upgrade, voicemail, or nothing.
  3. What counts as a billable call. Rounding, short calls, spam and transfers, quoted from each vendor's pricing page or terms with the date we read them.
  4. What you can try before you pay. Free plans, trials and their card rules, from the same pages.

We do not test answer quality, and no pick depends on anything but the arithmetic and the terms. The same ten ranked by call pattern instead of business situation are on best AI receptionist.

Left out: Slang.ai, which serves restaurants only and prices per location without a published call or minute allowance. Build-your-own voice platforms (Vapi, Retell, Bland, Synthflow), where you assemble the receptionist and pay for the parts: see build your own AI receptionist. Live virtual receptionists are priced on virtual receptionist vs AI receptionist. All-in-one phone systems that bundle an AI feature are not in any table.

Which AI receptionist is best for which small business

Best at 3 calls a day: Upfirst

Upfirst costs $59.95 at 3 three-minute calls a day, the least in the table at that volume and less than Goodcall's $79. Its Premium plan is $59.95/month for 90 calls, exactly 3 a day.

Strength: short and junk calls are free. Upfirst does not bill "calls under 15 seconds or calls where the caller never speaks", and spam does not count against the plan (upfirst.ai/pricing, read October 27, 2026). The 14-day trial needs no card.

Catch: every call past the allowance is billed. At 13 calls a day Upfirst costs $227.45, Pro plus 90 calls past its 300 at $0.75 a call.

Not for: a business whose call count swings a lot from month to month.

Best at 13 calls a day, especially with repeat callers: Goodcall

Goodcall costs $129 at 13 calls a day, the least in the table. Its Growth plan is $129/month for 500 unique callers.

Strength: call length and repeat calls cost nothing. "A thirty-second call and a nine-minute booking cost the same," and "The same person calling five times in a month is one customer" (goodcall.com/faq, read October 27, 2026). A trades business that calls customers back and forth pays for the customer once.

Catch: there is no trial. "You get a free demo agent instead," and you pay from the day you add a number. There is also "no pause" for a slow season, per the same FAQ.

Not for: under 2 calls a day. At 2 a day Rosie's $49 and Upfirst's $59.95 are both below Goodcall's $79.

Best flat bill between 3 and 11 calls a day: Rosie

Rosie costs $149 at 3 calls a day, and the bill does not move up to 11 a day: one Scale plan, $149/month for 1,000 minutes, covers the whole band. NextPhone is flat across the same band at $199, so Rosie costs less there. Below that, Professional at $49 covers 2 calls a day for less than Phonely's $50.

Strength: one price from 3 to 11 calls a day, and "English & Spanish on every call" on every plan (heyrosie.com/pricing, read October 26, 2026).

Catch: going over moves you up a plan rather than adding a meter. The higher plan applies to "at least the subsequent two consecutive billing periods" (heyrosie.com/legal/terms, read October 27, 2026). Every call rounds up to a full minute.

Not for: a line past 11 calls a day. Rosie costs less than NextPhone up to about 334 calls a month; above it, Rosie moves to Growth and costs more.

Best for a bill that never moves: NextPhone

NextPhone's Pro plan is $199/month for unlimited calls. From 13 to 26 calls a day its bill stays at $199, and every other AI receptionist with a published price at both volumes costs more at 26. Upfirst, for one, goes to $425, and Rosie publishes no plan that large. At 26 a day NextPhone costs the least of the AI receptionists we price, just under Goodcall's $201.80.

Strength: no allowance to outgrow. The pricing page: "A busy month costs exactly the same as a slow one." (getnextphone.com/pricing, read October 26, 2026)

Catch: the flat price costs the most in the table at 3 calls a day, $199. On Pro you build the agent yourself: the plan table's "Who builds your agent" row reads "You" for Pro and "Our team" for Growth, which is $299/month for unlimited calls.

Not for: low volume. Goodcall costs less up to about 770 calls a month, about 26 calls a day: at 13 a day it is $129 against NextPhone's $199.

Best if some calls need a person: Smith.ai AI Receptionist

Smith.ai is the vendor in the table with its own live receptionists behind the AI. Its help center: "Live agent involvement is billed at a flat rate of +$3.00 per call, only when used." (Smith.ai help, read October 7, 2026)

Strength: escalations the AI starts are free: "If the escalation is AI-initiated, there is no fee." (smith.ai/ai-receptionist, read October 27, 2026). Its smallest plan is free for 25 calls.

Catch: it costs the most in the table at 13 calls a day, $695.30. Cancelling takes notice: "If you ever cancel, we need 30 days' notice" (pricing page, read October 26, 2026).

Not for: a busy line where every call is routine.

The rest of the table

Dialzara. Entry: $29/month (60 minutes). Strength: it meters by the second, "partial minutes are not rounded up" (dialzara.com/pricing, read October 27, 2026), so short calls cost seconds. Catch: when minutes run out, "callers go straight to voicemail" unless you turn on auto-recharge. At 13 calls a day it costs $408.50.

My AI Front Desk. One plan, $99/month for 240 minutes: 200 voice plus a 1,000-credit pool worth 40, then $0.25 a minute. Strength: the same plan also carries chat, texting and email allowances on its pricing page. Catch: transferred calls are costed apart from AI minutes; its call log shows "AI call cost, transferred call cost" (help center, read October 27, 2026).

Phonely. Starter is $50/month for 200 minutes. Strength: a permanent free plan, free for 100 minutes. Catch: its page gives two overage rates for Starter, so 5 calls a day costs $112.50 to $137.50, and "post-transfer minutes may be billed" (phonely.ai/pricing, read October 26, 2026).

RingCentral AI Receptionist. Entry: from $49/month (100 minutes). Strength: it "Works with any business phone system" and comes with a 14-day trial (pricing page, read October 26, 2026). Catch: $0.50 a minute past 100 minutes, in 30-second steps, which makes it $584 at 13 calls a day. The page publishes no contract term. Compared in full on RingCentral AI Receptionist vs Smith.ai.

Simple Phones. Entry: from $97/month (100 calls). Strength: per call, and "We'll cover the cost of the phone line and development costs of the agent" (simplephones.ai/pricing, read October 26, 2026). Catch: no overage rate is published, and going over your tier releases your phone numbers, per the same FAQ.

What to check before you sign

Bring your last month of calls: how many, how long on average, how many from repeat callers. Overage, rounding, spam and transfer rules are compared vendor by vendor on AI receptionist cost. Then ask each vendor:

8 of 8 AI receptionists that publish a contract term are month-to-month (vendor terms, read October 5 to 27, 2026). Notice still varies: Smith.ai asks for 30 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AI receptionist for a small business?

At 3 three-minute calls a day, Upfirst costs the least of the ten AI receptionists in our table, $59.95 a month. At 13 a day Goodcall does, $129. Smith.ai is the one to look at if some calls need a live person.

How much does an AI receptionist cost a small business?

At 13 three-minute calls a day, AI receptionists with published prices cost $129 to $695.30 a month (prices checked October 26, 2026). At 3 calls a day they cost $59.95 to $199. Taxes, setup and add-ons are extra.

Is an AI receptionist worth it for a small business?

On cost alone, at every volume we price. One full-time receptionist on the BLS median wage costs $4,399 a month with benefits and turnover, against $129 to $695.30 for an AI receptionist at 13 three-minute calls a day. A person at the desk also greets visitors and does office work, which no AI plan prices.

Can I keep my business phone number with an AI receptionist?

Usually yes, by forwarding calls to the AI's number. Goodcall says to keep your number with your carrier and forward it, and Upfirst offers forwarding or a free port. Simple Phones releases the numbers it assigns if you cancel or exceed your tier.

Do AI receptionists require a contract?

None of the eight that publish a contract term asks for one. Dialzara, Goodcall, My AI Front Desk, NextPhone, Rosie, Simple Phones, Smith.ai and Upfirst all publish month-to-month terms. Smith.ai asks for 30 days' notice to cancel, and Rosie bills in 30-day periods that renew automatically.

Which AI receptionist does not charge for repeat callers?

Goodcall bills per unique caller: one phone number counts once a month however many times it calls. At 13 calls a day it costs $129, and less when some of those calls come from the same number. Flat-priced NextPhone also charges nothing for repeat calls.

How these numbers were made

Every vendor price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page on the date in its Source cell and saved as a dated capture. Monthly costs use each vendor's cheapest published plan for the volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. The in-house figure uses the BLS median wage for receptionists over 2,080 paid hours (paid leave included), other employer benefit costs and turnover, each from the BLS release named below. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices

  • Upfirst: cancellation notice recorded as none. Its pricing FAQ says "You can cancel, upgrade, or downgrade anytime, no questions asked," the same strength as other cancel-anytime terms. Its setup-fee summary now reads "None stated": no page says there is no fee. No price changed.
  • My AI Front Desk: the 1,000 monthly overage credits its pricing page lists as included ("Extra credits you get each month in case you go over your included usage") now count as 40 included minutes, so Business-in-a-Box covers 240 minutes before the $0.25 rate applies (was 200).
  • Phonely: its Professional plan card says 650 minutes and its comparison table 750; the card is used. When two plans tie on their lowest cost, the one with the narrower range is chosen, so Phonely at 300 calls a month prices on Professional alone.
