Published · prices checked October 26, 2026

Key takeaways

  • At 5 three-minute calls a day, live virtual receptionists cost $385 to $1,635 a month and AI receptionists $112.50 to $270 (prices checked October 26, 2026).
  • Across the 11 live services we price, the median bill is 6.0 times the median AI bill at 13 calls a day.
  • Smith.ai sells both, both per call: its live plan costs 4.1 times its AI plan at 13 calls a day.
  • A live minute often includes hold time, ring time or work after the caller hangs up. Rosie's AI minutes run from connect to disconnect.
  • One full-time receptionist costs $4,399 a month on the BLS median wage, more than every option in the table at 13 calls a day.

As of October 26, 2026, live virtual receptionists cost $385 to $1,635 a month for 5 three-minute calls a day, and AI receptionists cost $112.50 to $270. Live services bill people's time, mostly by the minute. AI receptionists bill minutes, calls, unique callers or a flat fee.

Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls over 30 days. Abby Connect is priced on human answering minutes. Goodcall bills per unique caller; we count every call as a new caller. Taxes, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.

The top five rows are AI receptionists; the bottom six sell live answering. At 13 calls a day Goodcall costs the least in the table, $129, and Ruby the most of the live services, $3,970.50.

The gap holds at every volume. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus costs the least of the live services at 3 calls a day, $254.60, and at 13, $990. Every AI receptionist with a published price costs less than it at both volumes.

Measured as a rate across the 11 live services in our virtual receptionist pricing table, live answering works out to $0.85 to $3.39 a minute all in at 13 calls a day. AI receptionists work out to $0.11 to $0.59. For the AI side alone, with every billing model explained, see AI receptionist cost.

What a virtual receptionist minute includes

A live minute and an AI minute are not the same unit. Live services bill a person's time, and several count time the caller never hears.

ServiceKindBilling unitRoundingBilled beyond the call
RubyLivePer minute60 seconds, rounded up per callHold time and after-call work; talk after a transfer not billed
PoshLivePer minute60 seconds, rounded up (terms); Posh's blog says a 90-second call counts as 1.5 minutesAfter-call work
Abby ConnectLive and AIAbby Minute (one AI minute counts as half)Each part rounded to the second, total rounded up to 30 secondsRing time and transfer time; hold excluded
Smith.ai Virtual ReceptionistsLivePer callPer call; extended intake must average 120 seconds or lessAdd-ons charged per call
Smith.ai AI ReceptionistAIPer answered callPer call; duration does not change the base call chargeLive agent involvement carries a separate per-call charge
RosieAIPer minute, in monthly minute bundles60 seconds, rounded up per callConnect to disconnect only
GoodcallAIPer unique caller a monthNo minute or call meterNo time-based charge
UpfirstAIPer callPer call; calls under 15 seconds not billedPer call, duration not billed
NextPhoneAIFlat monthly subscription with unlimited callsNo per-minute or per-call chargeNo usage-based charge

What that means on a real call, in each vendor's words:

  • Ruby bills the hold. "We include hold time but exclude talk time once a call is transferred to you or your voicemail box." (ruby.com/terms, read October 7, 2026)
  • Posh and Ruby bill the write-up. Both terms count "any time a receptionist spends completing any information on your call after the caller has hung up" (posh.com/terms, read October 7, 2026).
  • Abby Connect bills the ring. Its total "includes ring time, talk time, and transfer time but excludes any potential hold time", rounded up to 30 seconds (abby.com terms, read October 7, 2026).
  • An AI meter usually stops at the hang-up. Rosie's minutes run from when the call "connects with the AI Receptionist and ends when the call disconnects" (heyrosie.com/legal/terms, read October 27, 2026).

So the 3-minute arithmetic flatters live services more than AI ones. Add 30 seconds of hold and a minute of write-up to a 3-minute call, and Ruby bills 5 minutes after rounding.

Same company, two prices: Smith.ai live and AI

Smith.ai sells both products and bills both per call, so duration, rounding and hold time drop out. What is left is the price of a person against the price of software.

Calls a daySmith.ai Virtual ReceptionistsSmith.ai AI ReceptionistLive over AI
3 (90/mo)$810$187.504.3 times
5 (150/mo)$1,440$2705.3 times
13 (390/mo)$2,865$695.304.1 times

Per call at 13 a day, that is $7.35 a call for a person and $1.78 a call for the AI. Smith.ai's AI page explains why its AI plan costs more than most: "First, we have humans in the loop." (smith.ai pricing, read October 26, 2026)

The middle path has its own price. When a live agent takes over an AI call, "Live agent involvement is billed at a flat rate of +$3.00 per call, only when used" (Smith.ai help, read October 7, 2026). Escalations the AI starts on its own are free, per Smith.ai's AI product page.

Where a live virtual receptionist still wins

On price, AI wins at every volume in the table. Live services still win on these published terms:

Spam at Smith.ai. The live plan does not count spam "as long as the lines you forward to us pass Caller ID" (smith.ai/pricing/receptionists, read October 26, 2026). The AI plan counts "Every call answered by your AI Receptionist" by default, with up to 10% removable each cycle.

Talk after a transfer at Ruby. Ruby stops the clock when it puts the call through to you. Phonely, an AI receptionist, says "post-transfer minutes may be billed" (phonely.ai/pricing, read October 26, 2026).

A person first, not second. At 13 a day, Smith.ai's AI plan costs $1.78 a call. Add its live-agent add-on of $3.00 to every call and it still costs less than the live plan's $7.35 a call. What the live plan buys is a person who answers, rather than one the AI hands to.

Mixed plans. Abby Connect prices both on one meter: under "Human Answering", "1 Abby Minute = 1 minute"; under "AI Answering", "1 Abby Minute = 2 minutes" (abby.com/pricing, read October 26, 2026). Our table prices Abby on human minutes only; a line answered mostly by its AI uses half the minutes. At 5 calls a day, Abby costs $1,346.50 on human minutes, less than Smith.ai's live plan; by 13 a day, Smith.ai's per-call plan costs less. They swap at about 254 calls a month.

We do not test answer quality, so this page makes no claim about how either kind sounds to a caller.

Virtual, AI or an in-house receptionist

One full-time receptionist on the BLS median wage costs $4,399 a month with benefits and turnover, the same at 3 calls a day as at 30. That is 2.0 times Posh at 13 calls a day, and every service in the table costs less than one hire at that volume. The full model, with coverage hours and turnover, is on hire vs AI receptionist.

Which one fits your calls

Routine calls, any volume: an AI receptionist. At 13 calls a day Goodcall costs $129, against $990 for ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus, the least of the live services. See best AI receptionist for small business for picks by situation.

Every caller must reach a person: ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus. It costs $254.60 at 3 calls a day, the least of the live services. It bills per call, and its terms charge extra for each transfer and for calls after 7pm Phoenix time.

Long calls with a person on the line: Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists. Per call, so a long call costs the same as a short one, up to its intake limits. It costs $2,865 at 13 a day.

AI first, a person when needed: Smith.ai AI Receptionist. It costs $695.30 at 13 calls a day, plus $3.00 on each call a live agent takes.

Front desk work beyond the phone: a hire. Visitors, payments and filing are not in any plan above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than a virtual receptionist?

Yes, at every volume we price. At 5 three-minute calls a day, AI receptionists cost $112.50 to $270 a month and live virtual receptionists $385 to $1,635 (prices checked October 26, 2026). Every AI receptionist with a published price costs less than ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus, the least expensive live service, at 3 and 13 calls a day.

What is the difference between a virtual receptionist and an AI receptionist?

A virtual receptionist is a person working remotely: Ruby and Posh bill their minutes, Smith.ai each call. An AI receptionist is software that answers the call, billed by the minute, the call, the unique caller or a flat fee. Live minutes at Ruby and Posh also include hold time or work after the caller hangs up.

Can an AI receptionist transfer to a real person?

It can transfer to you or your team, and Smith.ai's AI can hand calls to its own live receptionists. Smith.ai bills that at $3.00 a call when you add live agent involvement, and nothing when its AI escalates on its own.

How much more does a live virtual receptionist cost?

At 13 three-minute calls a day, the median of the 11 live services we price costs 6.0 times the median AI receptionist. At Smith.ai, which sells both per call, the live plan costs 4.1 times the AI plan at that volume.

Which costs less than an in-house receptionist, virtual or AI?

Both, at 13 three-minute calls a day. One full-time hire on the BLS median wage costs $4,399; Ruby, the dearest live service, costs $3,970.50, and AI receptionists $129 to $695.30. Live services bill by the minute or call, so a much busier line closes their gap first.

How these numbers were made

Every vendor price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page on the date in its Source cell and saved as a dated capture. Monthly costs use each vendor's cheapest published plan for the volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. The in-house figure uses the BLS median wage for receptionists over 2,080 paid hours (paid leave included), other employer benefit costs and turnover, each from the BLS release named below. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.
