Clio AI Receptionist Integration 2026: Which Receptionists Write to Clio

Published · prices checked October 26, 2026

Key takeaways

  • 5 of 18 vendors we track document a built-in Clio integration: Abby Connect, NextPhone, Ruby, Smith.ai and Upfirst.
  • Smith.ai logs a call to an open matter only "as long as the client only has one matter", per its Clio App Directory listing.
  • NextPhone's Clio integration is on its Growth plan, $299/month for unlimited calls, not the Pro price in the table.
  • Upfirst books into the Clio calendar on every plan; writing contacts, matters and call logs takes Custom Actions you configure against the Clio API.
  • No cell here was tested on our own Clio account: each rests on Clio's App Directory or the vendor's own pages, read October 27, 2026.

Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for 150 calls a month plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. The cost is the receptionist's plan only: not a higher tier an integration may need, not Zapier, not your Clio subscription. How we price.

"Not documented" means neither the vendor's pages nor Clio's directory show a connection; it is not a "no". We have not connected any of these to a Clio account of our own. The grid for all eleven tools is on which AI receptionists integrate with which tools.

What each built-in integration writes to Clio

A receptionist can write to Clio Manage (contacts, matters, calendar) or Clio Grow (the intake pipeline). Quotes are from each Clio listing, read October 27, 2026, linked below.

ReceptionistClio productWhat lands in Clio, in the listing's words
NextPhoneManage and GrowBooks the consult, "creates the caller as a contact"; a Grow lead per NextPhone's page
Smith.aiManage"call summaries, contact information (name, email, phone number), and call duration/length"
RubyManage and GrowCalls, voicemails and messages to the "Clio Grow Matter Pipeline"
Abby ConnectManage and GrowNew-client calls to the "Clio Grow Lead inbox"; call information into Clio Manage
UpfirstManage (calendar)"books appointments right on your Clio calendar"

NextPhone: contact, booking and a Grow lead on one call

NextPhone's Clio listing says the AI "books the consultation as a calendar entry on your chosen calendar, creates the caller as a contact" (clio.com/app-directory/nextphone, read October 27, 2026). Its own page adds Clio Grow: "every call logs a complete lead: name, phone, email, call summary, and every intake answer" (getnextphone.com/integrations/clio, read October 27, 2026).

The catch is the plan. That page puts the integration on NextPhone's Growth plan, set up by its team, at $299/month for unlimited calls. The table prints Pro, $199, NextPhone's cheapest plan for 150 calls.

Smith.ai: calls logged to matters, with a one-matter rule

The listing reads "Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists", the live service. It says: "For existing clients, calls are added as communications to open matters (as long as the client only has one matter)." (clio.com/app-directory/smith-ai, read October 27, 2026) The listing does not say where the call goes when a client has two.

For the AI product, Smith.ai's AI pricing page lists "Native integrations (Clio, Zapier & more)" among the core features of every plan (smith.ai/pricing/ai-receptionist, read October 26, 2026). On the live receptionists' pricing page, a second CRM costs "$0.50/call per additional CRM" (smith.ai/pricing/receptionists, read October 26, 2026).

Ruby and Abby Connect: live receptionists, both Clio products

Ruby's listing: "Every call, voicemail, and message you receive via Ruby's live receptionists automatically syncs to your Clio Grow Matter Pipeline." (clio.com/app-directory/ruby, read October 27, 2026) In Clio Manage, Ruby's help center matches a call to a contact only "with the contact's first and last name, as well as the number called from" (rubyhelpcenter.helpjuice.com, read October 27, 2026). A client calling from a spouse's phone will not match.

Abby Connect sends new-client calls "to your Clio Grow Lead inbox", and its setup runs through its staff: "Once an API is provided, our CSM's will work to setup your intake and incoming call forms" (clio.com/app-directory/abby-connect, read October 27, 2026). Both bill by the minute, so long intake calls raise the bill.

Upfirst: calendar built in, the rest through its API tool

Upfirst's listing covers booking: it "books appointments right on your Clio calendar" (clio.com/app-directory/upfirst, read October 27, 2026). Every Upfirst plan card, Starter at $24.95/month (30 calls) included, says it "Books straight into Google, Outlook, Clio, Acuity, Calendly, Square, and more" (upfirst.ai/pricing, read October 26, 2026).

Contacts, matters and call logs go through "Custom Actions for live Clio Manage REST API v4 calls during and after a call" (upfirst.ai/integrations/clio, read October 27, 2026). You set those up yourself, endpoint by endpoint.

Two Clio claims the matrix does not count

RingCentral. Clio's directory lists "RingCentral for Clio", which embeds "RingCentral's fully functional web phone into Clio" (clio.com/app-directory/ringcentral, read October 27, 2026). That is the phone system; nothing on the page names RingCentral AI Receptionist, so its cell stays not documented.

My AI Front Desk. A My AI Front Desk law-firm page says "Frontdesk integrates natively with Clio" (myaifrontdesk.com/answering-service-for-law-firms/clio, read October 27, 2026). Its integrations page lists twelve integrations without Clio, and Clio's directory has no listing. We record it as via Zapier, through its private Zapier app, until a setup document exists.

What "via Zapier" means for Clio

9 of 18 vendors we track reach Clio this way: Bland, Dialzara, Goodcall, My AI Front Desk, Phonely, Posh, Retell AI, Rosie and Synthflow. Each has a Zapier app that fires when a call ends. Clio's Zapier app offers actions such as "Create Person Contact", "Create Matter", "Create Communication" and "Create Calendar Entry" (zapier.com/apps/clio, read October 27, 2026).

A Zap can file the caller as a contact after the call. It cannot read your Clio calendar during the call to offer a slot. You build and maintain the Zap, and Zapier bills you, not the vendor.

What to ask before you buy

  • Which Clio product? Manage, Grow, or both. Smith.ai's listing names matters and contacts; Upfirst's built-in part is the calendar.
  • Which plan includes it? NextPhone puts Clio on Growth. Ask every vendor for the plan name in writing.
  • Does it cover the AI or the people? Smith.ai's Clio listing is titled for its live receptionists. Ask whether the AI receptionist writes the same fields.
  • How are calls matched? Ruby matches on name and number; Smith.ai's listing covers clients with one open matter. Ask what happens to a call that does not match.
  • Can I see it on a test call? No row here was tested by us. Ask for a trial call that lands in your own Clio.

Which one fits which firm

For booking consults into Clio on the smallest bill: Upfirst. It costs $59.95, $119.95 and $227.45 at 3, 5 and 13 calls a day. At 3 and 5 a day that is less than NextPhone and Smith.ai AI Receptionist, the other two AI receptionists with a built-in Clio connection. At 13 a day NextPhone's Pro plan costs less, $199, but NextPhone puts Clio on Growth, $299/month for unlimited calls; Smith.ai's AI plan costs $695.30. It may not fit if you want contacts and matters filed without configuring API calls.

For a Grow lead and a Manage booking from one call, set up for you: NextPhone. Its pages describe both on the same call. The Growth plan that carries it costs $299/month for unlimited calls. Only the Manage side appears in the Clio listing; the Grow side rests on NextPhone's own page.

For a person on every call with both Clio products: Abby Connect. At 5 calls a day it costs $1,346.50 against Ruby's $1,635. One full-time receptionist on the BLS median wage for May 2025 costs $4,399 a month, 3.3 times Abby Connect at 5 calls a day: hire vs AI receptionist.

Firms on other practice software can compare AI receptionists that write to MyCase and AI receptionists that write to Lawmatics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which AI receptionists are listed in the Clio App Directory?

NextPhone, Smith.ai, Ruby, Abby Connect and Upfirst have listings in Clio's App Directory, read October 27, 2026. Smith.ai's listing is titled for its live receptionists. The "RingCentral for Clio" listing covers the RingCentral phone system, not its AI receptionist.

Can an AI receptionist book consultations on my Clio calendar?

Yes, by the vendors' own words. Upfirst's listing says it books appointments on the Clio calendar, on every Upfirst plan. NextPhone's listing says it checks real-time Clio calendar availability and books the consultation. A Zapier connection cannot do this during a call, because a Zap runs after the call ends.

Does Smith.ai log calls to Clio matters?

Yes, with a limit. Smith.ai's Clio App Directory listing says calls are added to open matters "as long as the client only has one matter". New callers become new contacts, and the call goes to the communications log.

What does a Clio integration cost on top of the receptionist?

NextPhone's Clio integration is on its Growth plan at $299/month for unlimited calls. Smith.ai's live receptionists page charges $0.50 a call for each CRM after the first. A Zapier route adds your own Zapier subscription, which our index does not price.

How these numbers were made

Every vendor price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page on the date in its Source cell and saved as a dated capture. Monthly costs use each vendor's cheapest published plan for the volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. The in-house figure uses the BLS median wage for receptionists over 2,080 paid hours (paid leave included), other employer benefit costs and turnover, each from the BLS release named below. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices

  • Upfirst: cancellation notice recorded as none. Its pricing FAQ says "You can cancel, upgrade, or downgrade anytime, no questions asked," the same strength as other cancel-anytime terms. Its setup-fee summary now reads "None stated": no page says there is no fee. No price changed.
  • Retell AI: corrected the transfer term. Its pricing page says "Once the call is transferred, the AI voice agent fee stops. Only the telephony fee continues for the remainder of the transferred call." The index had said the whole call was billed after a transfer. No price changed.
  • My AI Front Desk: the 1,000 monthly overage credits its pricing page lists as included ("Extra credits you get each month in case you go over your included usage") now count as 40 included minutes, so Business-in-a-Box covers 240 minutes before the $0.25 rate applies (was 200).
  • Phonely: its Professional plan card says 650 minutes and its comparison table 750; the card is used. When two plans tie on their lowest cost, the one with the narrower range is chosen, so Phonely at 300 calls a month prices on Professional alone.
  • My AI Front Desk: billing-term summaries (billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam, setup fee, contract, trial) added from the vendor-data billing-terms and contracts files and their captures. No price changed.
  • Simple Phones: billing-term summaries (billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam, setup fee, contract, trial) added from the vendor-data billing-terms and contracts files and their captures. No price changed.

  • Synthflow: billing-term summaries (billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam, setup fee, contract, trial) added from the vendor-data billing-terms and contracts files and their captures. No price changed.
  • Rosie added from its own pricing page (captured October 26, 2026), with billing terms from its terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 27, 2026). Rosie moves an account up a plan instead of charging overage.
  • Goodcall added from its own pricing page (captured October 26, 2026), with billing terms from its terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 27, 2026). Goodcall bills per unique caller a month; our arithmetic counts every call as a different caller.
  • Dialzara added from its own pricing page (captured October 26, 2026), with billing terms from its terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 27, 2026).
  • Upfirst added from its own pricing page (captured October 26, 2026), with billing terms from its terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 27, 2026). Upfirst does not bill calls under 15 seconds or spam.

  • Smith.ai AI Receptionist Enterprise at 500 calls ($800, $2.10 per extra call) added from its pricing page, in a full re-check of every source page.
  • Added NextPhone Pro, Growth and Scale from its public pricing page. All three plans include unlimited calls with no per-minute charge or overage fee.
  • Smith.ai AI Receptionist: billing terms added.
  • Ruby: 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 minutes ($4,945, $6,400 and $7,875, overage $3.50 to $3.30 a minute) added from its help center (read October 7, 2026).

  • Smith.ai AI Receptionist: billing terms added from its terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial.
  • Ruby: billing terms added from its terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial.
  • Posh: billing terms added from its terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial.
  • Abby Connect: billing terms added from its terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 7, 2026): billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam billing, setup fee, contract and trial.
  • Ruby: overage rates added from its help center ($5.40/min on the 50-minute plan down to $3.65 on 1,000 minutes), plus the 350, 750 and 1,000 minute plans published there. Ruby's pricing page still shows no overage rate.
  • Abby Professional overage corrected to $2.99 per Abby Minute (its terms and help center), from $3.00 computed as price divided by minutes.
