How to Build an AI Receptionist in 2026: What the Builder Platforms Charge, and What They Leave Out
Published · prices checked October 26, 2026
Key takeaways
- Build-your-own voice AI platforms bill $0.14 a minute (Bland) or $0.07 to $0.31 a minute (Retell AI) for usage (prices checked October 26, 2026).
- No platform rate is a working receptionist. The phone line, transfers and the hours to build and maintain the agent sit outside it, and on Vapi so do the model, speech and voice.
- At 13 three-minute calls a day, Bland's talk time is $163.80, $35 more than Goodcall's ready-made receptionist at $129, before Bland's phone line.
- Build when you need a call flow no packaged receptionist offers and you have someone to maintain it. Otherwise ready-made plans cost $129 to $695.30 a month at 13 calls a day.
- Where no vendor publishes an all-in figure (Vapi at any volume, Synthflow at all), we print "not computable" or "quote only" instead of estimating.
Building an AI receptionist on a voice platform starts at Bland's $0.14 a minute or Retell AI's $0.07 to $0.31 a minute (prices checked October 26, 2026). That rate is not the cost of a working receptionist. The phone line, transfers and your build time are extra; on Vapi, so are the model, speech and voice.
AI receptionist builder costs at 3, 5 and 13 calls a day

Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. Goodcall bills per unique caller, and we count every call as a new caller. Taxes, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.
The four rows marked "build your own" are platform usage only. The other nine are ready-made AI receptionists at their plan price, for a product you set up rather than build. Vapi's cells read "not computable" because its published rate is a hosting fee that leaves out every provider; Synthflow publishes no price at all.
Among the ready-made receptionists, Goodcall costs the least at 13 calls a day, $129. At 3 calls a day Upfirst costs the least, $59.95. NextPhone is the one bill in the table that does not move from 13 to 26 calls a day. Rosie's largest published plan, Growth at $299/month for 2,000 minutes, does not cover 26 a day, so its cell reads "not computable".
What each builder's published rate covers and leaves out
| Platform | Published rate | In the rate | Billed outside it | Usage at 13 calls/day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vapi (build your own) | $0.05/min hosting, plus each speech, model, voice and phone provider billed per minute | Hosting only | Transcriber, model and voice, each per minute; phone transport (Twilio inbound $0.008 a minute, Vapi's own free) | Not computable from the published price |
| Retell AI (build your own) | $0.07 to $0.31 a minute | Voice engine, voice, model | Telephony ($0.015 a minute on Retell's own), numbers ($2.00 a month), per-minute add-ons | $81.90 to $362.70 |
| Bland (build your own) | $0.14 a minute on Start | Model, speech-to-text, voice | Telephony at pass-through cost; transfer time at $0.05 a minute | $163.80 |
| Synthflow (build your own) | Quote only | Implementation and launch support, per contract | Not published | Quote only |

We add none of the "billed outside it" lines into a total. The telephony rate depends on your carrier, the add-ons on your build, and transfer minutes on how many calls you hand off. Where a figure depends on choices only you make, it is not computable from the page.
The vendors' own all-in numbers are the closest thing published. Vapi's calculator gives $82 to $129 a month for 1,000 minutes with its default providers. Bland's FAQ estimates rival stacks at "$0.13 to $0.30 per minute on Vapi and $0.11 to $0.25 per minute on Retell", an estimate from a competitor to both.
How to build an AI receptionist, step by step
Each step below names what it costs where the vendor publishes it. Quotes come from the four pricing pages listed under the table, read October 26, 2026.
- Pick a platform. The table above is the choice. Each lets you start before paying: Vapi with $5 in credits, Retell AI with $10, Bland with "2 credits + an inbound number" and no card. Synthflow starts with a sales call.
- Get a phone line. Vapi's free tier includes "1 included Vapi phone number", and Bland's Start plan includes an inbound number. Retell charges $2.00 a month for one of its numbers and nothing for one you bring. To keep your business number, forward it to the new line.
- Choose the model and voice. On Vapi and Retell this sets your per-minute cost. Retell's own line items: "Retell Voice Infra" at $0.055 a minute on every call, a voice from $0.015, plus the model. Bland bundles all three.
- Write the receptionist. The greeting, the questions to ask, what each kind of caller gets, your hours and your FAQ. A knowledge base on Retell adds "+$0.005/minute" to calls that use it.
- Wire transfers and booking. Decide who gets which calls and connect your calendar. On a platform both are configuration you build; see which receptionists write to Clio, HubSpot, Jobber and more for what ready-made products document. Transfers can bill: Bland charges $0.05 a transfer minute on Start. Retell AI drops its own fee at the handoff: "Once the call is transferred, the AI voice agent fee stops. Only the telephony fee continues for the remainder of the transferred call." (retellai.com/pricing, read October 26, 2026)
- Test before callers hear it. Vapi lists "Testing & simulation" on every plan; Retell lists "Simulation Testing". Test minutes are real minutes on the usage meter.
- Run it and keep it running. Prompts drift, providers retire models, and your hours change. Vapi's free tier offers "Peer to peer support via Discord community"; email support with a response target starts on Core at $29 a month.
How long it takes, in the vendors' words: Retell says "Go from signup to live agent in minutes". Bland says "Most teams deploy a first agent within a day on the self-serve plans" (pricing pages, read October 26, 2026). A first agent that answers is not a receptionist that transfers, books and handles the odd caller. Budget the gap in your own time.
Building vs buying at 3, 5 and 13 calls a day
At 3 calls a day, Bland's talk time is $37.80, less than Upfirst's $59.95, the lowest ready-made plan in the table. The difference, $22 a month, has to cover the phone line, any transfer minutes and every hour you spend on the agent.
At 13 calls a day the order flips. Bland's talk time is $163.80 and Goodcall's plan $129, so Bland costs $35 a month more before its telephony. NextPhone's flat $199 is still $35 above Bland's talk time.
Retell AI's usage at 13 calls a day spans $81.90 to $362.70. With a small model it costs less than any ready-made plan in the table. With the dearest model and voice it costs more than Goodcall, NextPhone, Upfirst, Rosie and My AI Front Desk, before the phone line.
So for a single business line, the platform rate leaves little room once the phone line and your time are counted. What building buys is control: your own model, your own call flow, outbound calls next to inbound, and a bill that tracks minutes.
One full-time receptionist on the BLS median wage costs $4,399 a month with benefits and turnover, at any call volume. That is 34.1 times Goodcall's ready-made plan at 13 calls a day (hire vs AI receptionist).
What the build costs that no price page shows
No platform publishes a price for building the receptionist, and we do not invent one. The cost falls on whoever does it: you, a developer you hire, or the vendor.
Three vendors sell the build itself. Synthflow puts "Implementation, onboarding, testing, training, launch support, and ongoing optimization" in a contract that starts at $30,000 a year. Dialzara's Done for You! starts at $1,500 a month. NextPhone's Growth plan, $299/month for unlimited calls, answers "Who builds your agent" with "Our team" (getnextphone.com/pricing, read October 26, 2026).
Which builder fits which situation
Best for a custom call flow with a developer: Retell AI
Per-second billing with "No rounding up per call" (retellai.com/pricing, read October 26, 2026), 20 concurrent calls free, any model on its list, and only telephony billed after a transfer. Usage at 5 calls a day is $31.50 to $139.50. It may not fit if callers wait on hold: silence is billed. Retell AI pricing.
Best for a bill you can forecast: Bland
One rate with the model, speech and voice included: $63 of talk time at 5 calls a day. It may not fit a line that transfers most calls. Bland pricing.
Best for choosing every provider: Vapi
"Provider costs with no markup" on every model and voice (vapi.ai/pricing, read October 26, 2026), and a free tier to build on. Its cost at any of our volumes is not computable from the page. Vapi pricing.
Best if you want the build done for you at scale: Synthflow
The contract includes implementation and launch. It starts at $30,000 a year. Synthflow pricing.
Best if you would rather not build: a ready-made receptionist
At 13 calls a day Goodcall costs $129; at 3 a day Upfirst costs $59.95. NextPhone at $199/month (unlimited calls) keeps the same bill from 13 to 26 calls a day. All AI receptionist prices are on AI receptionist cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to build an AI receptionist?
Platform usage starts at $0.14 a minute on Bland and $0.07 to $0.31 a minute on Retell AI, read from their pricing pages on October 26, 2026. At 13 three-minute calls a day, Bland's talk time is $163.80 a month. The phone line, transfer minutes and the time to build and maintain the agent are extra.
Can I build an AI receptionist myself?
Yes, on a build-your-own voice AI platform such as Vapi, Retell AI or Bland. You choose a phone line, write the agent's instructions, set up transfers and booking, and test it. The platforms publish usage rates; the build time is yours.
Is it cheaper to build or buy an AI receptionist?
At 3 three-minute calls a day, Bland's talk time of $37.80 is less than Upfirst's ready-made plan at $59.95. At 13 a day, Bland's $163.80 is $35 more than Goodcall's $129. Neither platform figure includes the phone line or the build work.
How long does it take to build an AI receptionist?
Retell AI says you can go from signup to a live agent in minutes, and Bland says most teams deploy a first agent within a day. Transfers, booking and edge cases take longer and keep needing changes.
Do AI receptionist builders include a phone number?
Some do. Vapi's free tier includes one Vapi phone number and Bland's Start plan includes an inbound number. Retell AI charges $2.00 a month for its numbers and nothing to connect your own carrier.
What is an AI receptionist builder?
A build-your-own voice AI platform: software that hosts a phone agent you design, billed by the minute. Vapi, Retell AI and Bland publish usage rates; Synthflow sells enterprise contracts. A ready-made AI receptionist is the finished product at a monthly price.
How these numbers were made
Every vendor price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page on the date in its Source cell and saved as a dated capture. Monthly costs use each vendor's cheapest published plan for the volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. The in-house figure uses the BLS median wage for receptionists over 2,080 paid hours (paid leave included), other employer benefit costs and turnover, each from the BLS release named below. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices
- Upfirst: cancellation notice recorded as none. Its pricing FAQ says "You can cancel, upgrade, or downgrade anytime, no questions asked," the same strength as other cancel-anytime terms. Its setup-fee summary now reads "None stated": no page says there is no fee. No price changed.
- Retell AI: corrected the transfer term. Its pricing page says "Once the call is transferred, the AI voice agent fee stops. Only the telephony fee continues for the remainder of the transferred call." The index had said the whole call was billed after a transfer. No price changed.
- My AI Front Desk: the 1,000 monthly overage credits its pricing page lists as included ("Extra credits you get each month in case you go over your included usage") now count as 40 included minutes, so Business-in-a-Box covers 240 minutes before the $0.25 rate applies (was 200).
- Phonely: its Professional plan card says 650 minutes and its comparison table 750; the card is used. When two plans tie on their lowest cost, the one with the narrower range is chosen, so Phonely at 300 calls a month prices on Professional alone.
- My AI Front Desk: billing-term summaries (billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam, setup fee, contract, trial) added from the vendor-data billing-terms and contracts files and their captures. No price changed.

- Upfirst added from its own pricing page (captured October 26, 2026), with billing terms from its terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 27, 2026). Upfirst does not bill calls under 15 seconds or spam.
- Smith.ai AI Receptionist Enterprise at 500 calls ($800, $2.10 per extra call) added from its pricing page, in a full re-check of every source page.
- Added NextPhone Pro, Growth and Scale from its public pricing page. All three plans include unlimited calls with no per-minute charge or overage fee.
- Smith.ai AI Receptionist: billing terms added.
- My AI Front Desk: overage of $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01) added; it was on the captured page but missing here.
