Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls over 30 days. Taxes, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.

RingCentral sells one standalone plan, $49/month for 100 minutes, and adds $0.50 a minute past it. Smith.ai sells call bundles: free for 25 calls, $150/month for 75 calls, $270/month for 150 calls and $500/month for 300 calls, each with its own rate per extra call.

Where RingCentral AI Receptionist costs less

From about 50 calls a month up, RingCentral costs less at every volume we price:

  • 3 a day: RingCentral $134, Smith.ai $187.50, 1.4 times as much.
  • 5 a day: RingCentral $224, Smith.ai $270.
  • 13 a day: RingCentral $584, Smith.ai $695.30, $111 a month apart.

Per call, the gap narrows as volume grows. RingCentral's cost per call barely moves: $1.49 a call at 3 a day, $1.50 a call at 13. Smith.ai's falls with each bigger bundle, from $2.08 a call to $1.78 a call. At 13 a day Smith.ai's largest Pro bundle covers 300 calls and the other 90 bill at $2.17 a call.

For RingCentral phone system customers, the AI is sold "as an add-on to RingEX, starting at $39 per month, also with 100 minutes included" (ringcentral.com pricing, read October 26, 2026). Our numbers use the standalone plan.

Where Smith.ai costs less

Under about 1 call a day. Smith.ai's free plan covers 25 calls, then $3.00 a call. At 30 calls a month it costs $15, $34 less than RingCentral's $49. Every free option is on free AI receptionist.

Long calls. Our arithmetic assumes 3 minutes. RingCentral's bill grows with every 30 seconds past that, at $0.50 a minute. Smith.ai's does not: "Billing per call means there's no mystery accounting involved," its pricing FAQ says (smith.ai pricing, read October 26, 2026). On our arithmetic, an average call past about 3.6 minutes, at 5 calls a day or at 13, puts RingCentral above Smith.ai.

Calls that need a person. RingCentral's AI "routes more complex requests to a team member with full context" (pricing page, read October 26, 2026). That is your own team. Smith.ai can put its own live receptionists on the call. "Live agent involvement is billed at a flat rate of +$3.00 per call, only when used" (Smith.ai help, read October 7, 2026). Escalations Smith.ai's AI starts itself are free.

What each plan includes

RingCentral AI Receptionist. One plan, with everything on it. The pricing page lists "Launch unlimited AI Receptionists" with no "per-seat or per-bot licensing fees" (read October 26, 2026). It adds "Auto-setup with your website's content" and a "Dedicated new phone number", or you can "easily port your existing line". Its product page lists "English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese" (ringcentral.com/ai-receptionist, read October 26, 2026).

Smith.ai AI Receptionist. The tiers buy support and setup, not features. Pro adds "Dedicated onboarding setup" and "Live phone, email & chat support". Enterprise, from $500/month for 300 calls, adds "Full-service setup & ongoing optimization" and "Custom AI prompting by our technical team" (smith.ai pricing, read October 26, 2026). Each plan includes as many test calls as real ones. Its AI page promises "Conversational fluency in English and Spanish" (smith.ai/ai-receptionist, read October 27, 2026).

At 26 calls a day, our arithmetic puts Smith.ai on its larger Enterprise plan, $800/month for 500 calls, and the bill comes to $1,388. RingCentral's comes to $1,169.

How each counts a call

RingCentral: minutes, rounded up to 30 seconds. "Call time is rounded up and billed in 30-second increments." A 40-second call bills a minute; a 3-minute-10-second call bills three and a half (ringcentral.com pricing, read October 26, 2026).

Smith.ai: answered calls. "Every call answered by your AI Receptionist counts toward your call quota by default." Calls from known spam numbers are filtered before they are answered and "do not count toward your quota". Customers can also remove "up to 10% of their calls from their bill each billing cycle" for spam (pricing page, read October 26, 2026).

RingCentral's pricing page publishes no rule on spam, robocalls or what else counts as call time. Ask before you forward your main line.

The catch with each

RingCentral AI Receptionist

  1. The contract is not on the page. The AI Receptionist pricing page we read publishes no term, notice period or setup fee. It sells the product "Starts at" a price, with "Contact sales" next to "Buy now".
  2. Extra bundles are unpriced. Past the included 100 minutes, pay-as-you-go charges apply at $0.50 a minute, and "Additional minute bundles are available for purchase" with no bundle price published.

Smith.ai AI Receptionist

  1. Cancelling takes 30 days. "If you ever cancel, we need 30 days' notice, and then you're done." (pricing page, read October 26, 2026)
  2. Plan changes wait a month. "We'll start billing for your new plan the next month," per the same FAQ. A busy month on a small bundle is billed at its extra-call rate, for example $2.50 a call on Pro at 75 calls.
  3. Answered spam is billed. Beyond the 10% allowance, spam that gets through counts as a call.
  4. The human backup is extra. The live-agent add-on sits on top of the plan price and any extra-call charges.

Which one to pick

Fewer than about 1 call a day: Smith.ai's free plan. It costs $15 at 30 calls a month, less than RingCentral at that volume.

3 to 13 short calls a day: RingCentral AI Receptionist. It costs $224 at 5 calls a day against Smith.ai's $270. It fits best if you already run RingCentral phones.

Long calls, or calls that need a person: Smith.ai. Per-call billing ignores length, and its live agents can take over. Check that the 30-day notice works for you.

Neither, on price alone. At 13 calls a day every alternative below costs less than both.

How these numbers were made

Every vendor price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page on the date in its Source cell and saved as a dated capture. Monthly costs use each vendor's cheapest published plan for the volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only.
