Published · prices checked October 26, 2026

Key takeaways

  • Retell AI usage costs $81.90 to $362.70 at 13 three-minute calls a day, before the phone line (prices checked October 26, 2026). The model and voice set where you land.
  • Bland prices the model, speech and voice as one rate: $163.80 of talk time at that volume, plus transfer minutes.
  • Dialzara is a ready-made receptionist that meters like Retell, to the second with no round-up, and costs $199 at 5 calls a day.
  • At 13 calls a day Goodcall costs the least of the ready-made receptionists in our table, $129.

Retell AI is pay as you go at $0.07 to $0.31 a minute, or $81.90 to $362.70 of usage at 13 three-minute calls a day (prices checked October 26, 2026). At that volume Goodcall, the lowest-cost ready-made AI receptionist in our table, costs $129, and Bland's talk time is $163.80.

What does Retell AI cost?

Retell's rate is a sum you assemble: its voice engine, a voice and a model, each priced per minute on its page. The lowest-priced choices put you at the bottom of the range, the dearest voices and the largest models at the top. The phone line, at $0.015 a minute on Retell's own telephony, and numbers at $2.00 a month sit outside it (retellai.com/pricing, read October 26, 2026).

At 3, 5 and 13 calls a day that is $18.90 to $83.70, $31.50 to $139.50 and $81.90 to $362.70 of usage. The full breakdown is on Retell AI pricing.

Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. Goodcall bills per unique caller; we count every call as a new caller. Taxes, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.

Read the two kinds of row differently. A "build your own" row is platform usage before the phone line and before anyone builds the agent. Every other row is a ready-made AI receptionist's plan price at that volume. Vapi's cells read "not computable" because its hosting fee excludes the providers that make up most of a call.

Retell's own range spans most of the ready-made rows at 13 calls a day. With a small model and a standard voice, usage sits under every ready-made plan in the table. With the largest model and the dearest voice, it sits above Goodcall, NextPhone, Upfirst, Rosie and My AI Front Desk, inside Phonely's range, and below only Dialzara and RingCentral AI Receptionist.

What each alternative does better and worse than Retell AI

Bland

Better: one rate with the model, speech and voice "Included in your per-minute rate", $0.14 a minute on Start, so you do not pick your way into a range. Worse: a "Transfer Time Rate" on top, and a daily cap of 100 calls on Start (bland.ai/pricing, read October 26, 2026). Bland's FAQ estimates production Retell stacks at "$0.11 to $0.25 per minute"; that is a rival's estimate, not a Retell price. See Bland pricing.

Vapi

Better: "Provider costs with no markup" on every model and voice, and phone lines from Vapi, Twilio, Vonage or Telnyx. Worse: the advertised rate is a hosting fee only, so the only all-in number on Vapi's page is its calculator's: $82 to $129 for 1,000 minutes (vapi.ai/pricing, read October 26, 2026). The free tier has 4 concurrent calls, against Retell's 20. See Vapi pricing.

Synthflow

Better: an enterprise contract that includes implementation, testing and launch support. Worse: "Enterprise contracts start at $30,000 annually" (synthflow.ai/pricing, read October 26, 2026). Retell's own Enterprise plan is also custom-priced, so compare quotes if you are at that scale. See Synthflow pricing.

Dialzara

Better: the same metering rule as Retell in a finished receptionist: "Usage tracked to the second - partial minutes are not rounded up." (dialzara.com/pricing, read October 27, 2026). Worse: run out of minutes without auto-recharge and "callers go straight to voicemail", per the same FAQ. At 13 calls a day it costs $408.50, more than Retell's usage even at the top of its range. See Dialzara pricing.

Rosie

Better: its Scale plan covers 3 to 11 calls a day at one price, $149, less than Dialzara at 5 calls a day. Worse: going over moves you up a plan, and the upgrade applies to "the then-current monthly billing period and at least the subsequent two consecutive billing periods" (heyrosie.com/legal/terms, read October 27, 2026). See Rosie pricing.

Upfirst

Better: short calls are free: Upfirst does not bill "calls under 15 seconds or calls where the caller never speaks" (upfirst.ai/pricing, read October 27, 2026). At 3 calls a day it costs $59.95. Worse: it bills per call, so the bill climbs with volume: $227.45 at 13 a day. See Upfirst pricing.

NextPhone

Better: $199/month (unlimited calls); the page says "no per-minute charges, no overage" (getnextphone.com/pricing, read October 26, 2026). Worse: at 3 calls a day you pay $199 for a volume Upfirst covers for $59.95, and on the entry plan you set up the agent yourself. See NextPhone pricing.

Where Retell AI is still the better buy

Retell keeps three advantages no ready-made row in the table matches together. You choose the model and voice, you get 20 concurrent calls free, and you are billed to the second with "No rounding up per call" (retellai.com/pricing, read October 26, 2026).

It fits a developer with a use case a packaged receptionist does not cover: an unusual intake flow, your own model, outbound calls next to inbound. Retell's free credits of $10 let you build it before you pay.

Which alternative fits which situation

Best for a single platform rate: Bland

$163.80 of talk time at 13 calls a day, with no model choice to price. It may not fit a line that transfers most calls: transfer minutes bill on a second meter.

Best for per-second billing without building: Dialzara

Dialzara meters to the second, as Retell does, and costs $199 at 5 calls a day. It may not fit a busy month: when the minutes run out, callers go to voicemail unless you turn on auto-recharge.

Best for 13 calls a day without building: Goodcall

$129, the least of the ready-made receptionists in the table at 13 calls a day. It bills per unique caller, so a line with many repeat callers costs less than our arithmetic shows.

Best for 3 calls a day without building: Upfirst

$59.95, the least of the ready-made receptionists in the table at 3 calls a day, with short calls not billed.

Best if your volume swings: NextPhone

NextPhone's bill does not move from 13 to 26 calls a day, $199, while every other priced option in the table rises. Rosie's largest published plan, Growth at $299/month for 2,000 minutes, does not cover 26 a day. It may not fit a quiet line: at 3 calls a day NextPhone costs $199 against Upfirst's $59.95.

How to switch from Retell AI without losing calls

  1. Keep your number where it is. Retell charges "No Charge for custom phone numbers", so if you brought your own carrier number, point it at the new service. A Retell-bought number at $2.00 a month is the one to ask about before you leave: the page does not cover porting.
  2. Nothing to cancel on usage. Retell states "No minimums, no contracts" for pay as you go. Remove the monthly items you added: extra concurrency, extra knowledge bases, verified numbers.
  3. Export what you built. Prompts, transfer rules and knowledge bases do not move between products. A ready-made receptionist takes them as settings; another platform takes them as a rebuild.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cheaper than Retell AI?

Bland's talk time and Goodcall's flat plan both sit inside Retell's range, so the answer turns on the model and voice you run. At 13 three-minute calls a day Retell's usage costs $81.90 to $362.70, before telephony. Bland's talk time is $163.80 and Goodcall's ready-made receptionist $129 at that volume (prices checked October 26, 2026).

Is Bland cheaper than Retell AI?

At 13 three-minute calls a day, Bland's talk time of $163.80 sits inside Retell AI's usage range of $81.90 to $362.70. Retell costs less with small models and standard voices and more with the dearest ones. Bland bills transfer minutes separately; Retell bills telephony separately.

Is there an AI receptionist that bills by the second like Retell?

Yes. Dialzara's pricing page says usage is tracked to the second and partial minutes are not rounded up. It costs $199 at 5 three-minute calls a day, as a ready-made receptionist rather than a platform.

Do I need a developer to use Retell AI?

Retell says you can go "from signup to live agent in minutes" with templates. Turning that agent into a receptionist (transfers, booking, after-hours rules) is configuration you do and maintain yourself. A ready-made AI receptionist ships those as settings.

Can I keep my phone number if I leave Retell AI?

A number from your own carrier stays with that carrier, since Retell connects to it rather than owning it. Retell's pricing page does not say whether a number bought from Retell can be ported out.

How these numbers were made

Every vendor price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page on the date in its Source cell and saved as a dated capture. Monthly costs use each vendor's cheapest published plan for the volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices

  • Upfirst: cancellation notice recorded as none. Its pricing FAQ says "You can cancel, upgrade, or downgrade anytime, no questions asked," the same strength as other cancel-anytime terms. Its setup-fee summary now reads "None stated": no page says there is no fee. No price changed.
  • Retell AI: corrected the transfer term. Its pricing page says "Once the call is transferred, the AI voice agent fee stops. Only the telephony fee continues for the remainder of the transferred call." The index had said the whole call was billed after a transfer. No price changed.
  • My AI Front Desk: the 1,000 monthly overage credits its pricing page lists as included ("Extra credits you get each month in case you go over your included usage") now count as 40 included minutes, so Business-in-a-Box covers 240 minutes before the $0.25 rate applies (was 200).
  • Phonely: its Professional plan card says 650 minutes and its comparison table 750; the card is used. When two plans tie on their lowest cost, the one with the narrower range is chosen, so Phonely at 300 calls a month prices on Professional alone.
  • My AI Front Desk: billing-term summaries (billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam, setup fee, contract, trial) added from the vendor-data billing-terms and contracts files and their captures. No price changed.

  • Goodcall added from its own pricing page (captured October 26, 2026), with billing terms from its terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 27, 2026). Goodcall bills per unique caller a month; our arithmetic counts every call as a different caller.
  • Dialzara added from its own pricing page (captured October 26, 2026), with billing terms from its terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 27, 2026).
  • Upfirst added from its own pricing page (captured October 26, 2026), with billing terms from its terms, FAQ and help pages (read October 27, 2026). Upfirst does not bill calls under 15 seconds or spam.
  • Added NextPhone Pro, Growth and Scale from its public pricing page. All three plans include unlimited calls with no per-minute charge or overage fee.
  • My AI Front Desk: overage of $0.25 a minute (25 credits at $0.01) added; it was on the captured page but missing here.
