Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. Goodcall bills per unique caller; we count every call as a new caller. Taxes, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.
Among the per-minute services, Go Answer costs the least at 100 and 200 calls and MAP Communications at 50. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus, billed per call, costs the least of all at the three volumes.
Moving 100 calls a month from Ruby to Posh, which also rounds to the minute, saves $530 a month, or $6,360 a year.
Ruby, Posh and MAP Communications: shared contract language
Three services in the table write their contracts in the same words. Ruby's terms bill "any time a receptionist spends completing any information on your call after the caller has hung up"; Posh's and MAP Communications' terms use the identical clause. All three cap their liability at "a credit adjustment equal to your pro-rated monthly service charge for the period during which the liability arose" (ruby.com/terms, posh.com/terms and mapcommunications.com/terms, read October 7, 2026).
Two documents also carry MAP addresses. Links in Ruby's terms carry a mapcommunications.com address in their tracking string, and Posh's data processing addendum names "compliance@mapcommunications.com" as its privacy contact (posh.com, read October 7, 2026). No page we read states that one company owns the three, so we price them as separate vendors. If you leave Ruby for Posh or MAP, expect the same after-call billing.
What each alternative does better and worse than Ruby
ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus
Better: $260 at 100 calls, billed per call, so a long call costs the same as a short one. Worse: transfers carry a per-call fee in the terms, and "overnight calls are handled by our equally skilled, English-speaking team in Australia" (receptionhq.com/faqs, read October 7, 2026).
Go Answer
Better: $345 at 100 calls, billed by the second where Ruby rounds to the minute. Worse: your numbers "always remain the property of Go Answer", ported-in numbers included (goanswer.io/terms-conditions, read October 7, 2026).
MAP Communications
Better: $211.50 at 50 calls, against Ruby's $620. Worse: it bills after-call work exactly as Ruby does, adds "a flat fee charged on seven major holidays" with no amount published, and says spam calls "are not something we have control over" (MAP terms and its Trustpilot reply, read October 7, 2026).
Specialty Answering Service
Better: robocalls, faxes and dead air are "limited to 30 seconds of billable time" (support article, read October 7, 2026). Worse: "If you terminate services, you are not permitted to port-away the telephone number" (terms, read October 7, 2026).
Answering Service Care
Better: $409 at 100 calls. Worse: "The annual maintenance fee is billed in advance for the upcoming year", and its amount is not on the pricing page (terms, read October 9, 2026).
PATLive
Better: after the first minute it bills in 6-second steps, where Ruby bills whole minutes. Worse: the same "one-minute minimum" on every call, and Spanish is "Available from 8 am to 10 pm ET" (help.patlive.com, read October 7, 2026).
Moneypenny
Better: after-call work is capped, "up to 180 seconds per call", where Ruby states no cap (Moneypenny terms, read October 7, 2026). Worse: cancelling takes "one full calendar month advanced notice" by phone (Moneypenny terms, read October 7, 2026).
Posh
Better: its overage rate is at or below its included rate on every plan; on the 100-minute plan both are $2.15 a minute. A trial runs 7 days or 250 minutes with no card. Worse: Posh rounds to the minute like Ruby, and "You have no property rights to any telephone number" it assigns (posh.com/terms, read October 7, 2026).
Abby Connect
Better: Abby Connect rounds to 30 seconds, and AI-handled minutes count half. Worse: the 30-second total "includes ring time, talk time, and transfer time", and cancelling after the first month needs "at least 30 days' advance notice" (abby.com terms, read October 26, 2026).
Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists
Better: Smith.ai charges per call, and spam and misdials are not counted "as long as the lines you forward to us pass Caller ID" (pricing page, read October 26, 2026). Worse: add-ons such as booking are charged on every call in the plan, not only the calls that use them.
AI receptionists as Ruby alternatives
An AI receptionist answers every call itself, with no human on the line. It fits calls that are bookings, hours and messages:
| Service | Entry plan | 3 calls/day (90/mo) | 5 calls/day (150/mo) | 13 calls/day (390/mo) | If calls double (13 to 26 a day) | Overage | Source |

| Simple Phones | From $97/month (100 calls) | $97 | Not computable from the published price | Not computable from the published price | Not computable | Not published | simplephones.ai/pricing, read Oct 26, 2026 |
Simple Phones publishes no rate past the 100 calls in its entry plan, so we cannot price it at 5 or 13 calls a day.
At 13 calls a day, Goodcall costs the least of the AI receptionists in the table, $129; Smith.ai's AI Receptionist costs the most, $695.30. At 3 calls a day Upfirst costs the least, $59.95. One bill does not move from 13 to 26 calls a day: NextPhone at $199. Rosie's largest published plan covers 2,000 minutes, short of the 2,340 that 26 calls a day use, so its bill there cannot be computed.
Where Ruby is still the better buy
At low volume Ruby can beat a per-call plan. At 15 three-minute calls a month, Ruby's smallest plan, $250/month for 50 minutes, costs less than Smith.ai's 30-call Starter at $300.
Ruby also bundles what others sell as add-ons. Scheduling, intake, payment collection and outbound assists come with every plan, and Ruby says "There is no additional charge for utilizing Ruby's 24/7 service" (help center, read October 7, 2026).
One full-time receptionist on the BLS median wage (May 2025) costs $4,399 a month with benefits and turnover, 3.8 times Ruby's bill at 100 calls: receptionist cost vs AI receptionist.
Which alternative fits which situation
Best per-minute plan at 100 to 200 calls: Go Answer
$345 at 100 calls and $700 at 200, the least of the 8 per-minute services in the table. It may not fit if you want to keep the number it assigns.
Best near 50 calls a month: MAP Communications
$211.50 at 50 calls, the least of the per-minute services at that volume. At 100 calls Go Answer takes over. It may not fit if your receptionists write long messages: MAP's after-call time has no cap.
Best for the lowest bill: ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus
$260 at 100 calls, the least in the table at 50, 100 and 200 calls. It may not fit if most calls are transferred or come in overnight.
Best if most calls are routine: an AI receptionist
At 3 calls a day Upfirst costs $59.95, against Ruby's $1,028. It may not fit callers who expect a person.
How to switch from Ruby without losing calls or your number
- Port your number before you cancel. Ruby allows a port-away "provided your account is in good standing", and a Ruby-assigned number only if "assigned to you more than 21 days prior to the port-away date" (ruby.com/terms, read October 7, 2026).
- Do not wait three months. Ruby may reassign numbers "not ported back within three months after termination" (same terms).
- Cancel before the next invoice date. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period, and "there are no refunds or credits for partially used periods" (same terms).
- Run both for a week. Forward overflow to the new service first, then move the main line once its call notes look right.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is cheaper than Ruby receptionist?
At 100 three-minute calls a month, every service in our table costs less than Ruby's $1,160. ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus costs $260 and Go Answer $345, prices checked October 26, 2026.
Is Posh cheaper than Ruby?
Yes, at 50, 100 and 200 three-minute calls. At 100 calls Posh costs $630 and Ruby $1,160. Both round every call up to a full minute and bill after-call work.
Are Ruby, Posh and MAP Communications the same company?
Their terms share clauses word for word, including the after-call billing and liability clauses, and Posh's privacy contact uses a mapcommunications.com address. None of the pages we read states that one company owns them, so we treat them as separate vendors.
Can I keep my phone number if I leave Ruby?
Yes, if you port it out while the account is in good standing. A number Ruby assigned must have been yours for more than 21 days, and Ruby may reassign numbers not ported within three months after the account ends.
Is an AI receptionist a real alternative to Ruby?
For calls that are bookings, questions and messages, yes. At 5 three-minute calls a day, AI receptionists cost $112.50 to $270 a month, against Ruby's $1,635. Callers who need judgment from a person still need a live service.
How these numbers were made
Every vendor price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page on the date in its Source cell and saved as a dated capture. Monthly costs use each vendor's cheapest published plan for the volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. The in-house figure uses the BLS median wage for receptionists over 2,080 paid hours (paid leave included), other employer benefit costs and turnover, each from the BLS release named below. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices
- Upfirst: cancellation notice recorded as none. Its pricing FAQ says "You can cancel, upgrade, or downgrade anytime, no questions asked," the same strength as other cancel-anytime terms. Its setup-fee summary now reads "None stated": no page says there is no fee. No price changed.
- My AI Front Desk: the 1,000 monthly overage credits its pricing page lists as included ("Extra credits you get each month in case you go over your included usage") now count as 40 included minutes, so Business-in-a-Box covers 240 minutes before the $0.25 rate applies (was 200).
- Phonely: its Professional plan card says 650 minutes and its comparison table 750; the card is used. When two plans tie on their lowest cost, the one with the narrower range is chosen, so Phonely at 300 calls a month prices on Professional alone.
- My AI Front Desk: billing-term summaries (billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam, setup fee, contract, trial) added from the vendor-data billing-terms and contracts files and their captures. No price changed.
- Simple Phones: billing-term summaries (billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam, setup fee, contract, trial) added from the vendor-data billing-terms and contracts files and their captures. No price changed.
