Live Virtual Receptionist Services 2026: What Live Means at Each, and What It Costs

Published · prices checked October 26, 2026

Key takeaways

  • The seven services in our table cost $403 to $1,160 a month for 100 three-minute calls, MAP Communications the least and Ruby the most (prices checked October 26, 2026).
  • Live does not always mean a person at every hour. Abby Connect's terms staff human receptionists 104 of the 168 hours in a week; its AI takes the rest unless you configure 24/7.
  • Smith.ai sells live receptionists and an AI receptionist that hands calls to a person; each handoff adds $3.00 to the call, per its help center.
  • At 100 calls, Smith.ai's live plan costs 4.3 times its AI plan.
  • Where staff sit and who is human are the vendors' own claims, quoted with the page and date we read them.

As of October 26, 2026, a live virtual receptionist costs $403 to $1,160 a month for 100 three-minute calls at the seven services below. "Live" means a person answers, but each service draws the line between person and software in a different place, and at different hours.

Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls, every minute priced as a human minute. Taxes, pass-through fees, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.

Of these seven, MAP Communications costs the least at 50 and 100 calls: $403 at 100. Ruby costs the most at 100 calls, $1,160. Every service here bills for a person's time, so the bill tracks how long people spend on your calls.

What "live" means at each service

Ruby: a person on every call, AI behind the scenes

Ruby's answering page says: "We're live 24/7 and 100% based in the US." (ruby.com/answering-service, read October 7, 2026) AI appears on the pricing page as a feature, not a receptionist: "optional AI enhancements are available in all our plans, at no extra cost!" (ruby.com/plans-and-pricing, read October 26, 2026)

The 24/7 has one stated gap. Ruby's help center: "During maintenance activities, calls will be handled by an afterhours solution." (Ruby help center, read October 26, 2026) Maintenance runs "during off-peak hours", the same article says, without naming them.

Posh: people by default, AI plans billed by the AI minute

Posh says: "All of our Receptionists are U.S. based and work out of our office in Virginia Beach, Virginia." (posh.com/faqs, read October 26, 2026) Its standard plans price only receptionist minutes: $420/month for 200 minutes covers 66 three-minute calls.

Posh also sells AI-enabled plans, where an AI agent answers and "AI can also transfer callers to a Live Receptionist for special requests or last-minute changes" (posh.com/ai, read October 7, 2026). AI minutes cost $1.10 on the smallest of those plans and $0.98 on the largest, about half the live rate. Each plan reads "Mixed minutes included" without saying how many.

Smith.ai: two products, and the AI hands calls to people

Smith.ai sells live Virtual Receptionists and a separate AI Receptionist. Its live pricing page lists "No overseas agents" among what every plan includes (smith.ai/pricing/receptionists, read October 26, 2026).

The AI product answers first. When a caller needs more, Smith.ai says its "AI Receptionist can immediately transfer them to an experienced live agent at your discretion" (smith.ai/pricing/ai-receptionist, read October 26, 2026). That handoff is billed: "Live agent involvement is billed at a flat rate of +$3.00 per call, only when used." (Smith.ai AI help center, read October 7, 2026)

At 100 three-minute calls the AI plan costs $212.50 and the live plan $915. The live plan costs 4.3 times as much, or $703 more a month. Every handoff narrows that gap by the add-on price.

Abby Connect: people on set hours, AI around the clock

Abby Connect puts both on one meter: a human minute uses one Abby Minute and an AI minute uses half. Its terms set when the people are there: "Standard human receptionist answering is available during normal business hours: 5am-9pm PST weekdays, and 6am-6pm PST on weekends; AI Receptionist answering is available 24/7/365." (Abby terms, read October 26, 2026)

That is 104 staffed hours of the 168 in a week, our arithmetic: 16 hours on each weekday and 12 on each weekend day. Overnight, by default, the AI answers. A 24/7 configuration runs all hours, but the terms do not say whether people or the AI take those overnight calls. Abby describes its staff this way: "Our receptionists work from our Las Vegas office, ensuring higher quality control and consistency, not remote or offshore." (abby.com, read October 7, 2026)

What a person costs over AI

At 100 three-minute calls, the AI receptionists we price cost $69.95 to $212.50 a month. Every one with a published price costs less than MAP Communications, the least of the live services in the table above.

At 100 calls a monthCostWhat answers
Smith.ai AI Receptionist$212.50AI, with a paid handoff to a person
Posh$630People
Abby Connect, every minute human$898People on staffed hours, AI otherwise
Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists$915People
Ruby$1,160People

Abby Connect's real bill sits below its row whenever its AI takes calls, because each AI minute counts as half. All AI, the same 300 minutes would use 150 Abby Minutes. The full AI side, every vendor at the same volumes, is on AI receptionist cost; the head-to-head trade-off is on virtual receptionist vs AI receptionist.

Who answers, and from where: the vendors' claims

We report these claims; we have not tested them. Each is quoted from the vendor's own page.

PATLive"100% US receptionists, and fully human (no AI)"patlive.com/services/live-call-answering, October 7, 2026

PATLive is the one service in the table that states it uses no AI at all. At 100 calls it costs $479, billed in 6-second steps after the first minute.

The catch with paying for a person

A person bills for time the caller never hears: Ruby counts hold time, Abby Connect ring time, and Ruby and Posh the write-up after the caller hangs up. Each clause is quoted on virtual receptionist pricing.

Abby Connect's AI picks up when its people are off shift; Smith.ai's AI hands to people; Ruby and Posh route every call to a receptionist. If a live answer at 3am matters to you, ask each vendor who answers at that hour on your plan, and get it in writing. Our 24/7 virtual receptionist page prices round-the-clock cover against an in-house hire.

Which live service fits which need

Best for the lowest live bill in this table: MAP Communications

MAP Communications costs the least of the seven at 50, 100 and 200 calls: $777 at 200, against Posh's $1,170. It may not fit if your line gets spam: MAP says spam is "not something we have control over" and does not exclude it from the bill.

Best for a person on every call at any hour: Ruby

Ruby says it is live around the clock and charges nothing extra for nights, weekends or holidays. At 100 calls it costs $1,160, the most in the table. It may not fit calls with long holds, which its terms bill.

Best for AI first with a person behind it: Smith.ai AI Receptionist

The AI plan costs $212.50 at 100 calls, less than Smith.ai's live plan. It may not fit if most calls need a person, because every handoff carries the add-on charge.

Best for people by day and AI by night: Abby Connect

All human, 100 calls cost $898, less than Smith.ai's live plan. AI minutes count as half, so after-hours AI calls stretch the plan. It may not fit if you need people on its seven closed holidays.

How these numbers were made

Every vendor price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page on the date in its Source cell and saved as a dated capture. Monthly costs use each vendor's cheapest published plan for the volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.
