Our arithmetic: each vendor's cheapest published plan for that volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls, at any hour. Taxes, pass-through fees, after-hours surcharges, setup fees and add-ons are not included. How we price.
At 100 calls ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus costs the least of these ten, $260, before its after-hours charge. Ruby costs the most, $1,160. Every service here prices a night call like a day call except ReceptionHQ, and MAP Communications adds a holiday fee.
Who charges extra for nights, weekends and holidays
Most publish that they do not. Abby Connect, AnswerFirst, Answering Service Care, Go Answer, MAP Communications, Moneypenny (US), PATLive, Posh, Ruby, Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists and Specialty Answering Service each say nights cost nothing extra (vendor terms, read October 5 to 26, 2026). Abby Connect, AnswerFirst, Answering Service Care, Moneypenny (US), PATLive, Posh, Ruby, Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists and Specialty Answering Service say the same for holidays. Two services in our table add a charge: ReceptionHQ after hours and MAP Communications on holidays. In the vendors' words:
| Service | What it says about nights, weekends and holidays | Page, read |
|---|---|---|
| Ruby | "There is no additional charge for utilizing Ruby's 24/7 service" | Ruby help center, October 7, 2026 |
| Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists | "Does 24/7 mean 24/7/365? Yes it does!" | docs.smith.ai, October 7, 2026 |
| Posh | "no surcharges for after-hours, weekend, or holiday calls" | posh.com blog, October 7, 2026 |
| Abby Connect | "Nights, weekends and holidays are included on every plan with no upcharge" | abby.com/free-trial, October 26, 2026 |
| Moneypenny | "Our 24/7 service is included as standard in all of our pricing plans" | moneypenny.com/us, October 7, 2026 |
| Specialty Answering Service | "We do not charge any extra or hidden fees to answer your calls over a holiday, weekend, or after hours." | specialtyansweringservice.net, October 7, 2026 |
ReceptionHQ is the exception in our table. Its terms charge for calls answered "outside of 5am to 7pm Monday to Friday local time in Phoenix, Arizona", which "will incur a surcharge as part of Customer's Usage Charges of $0.30 per call for ReceptionistPlus subscriptions" (receptionhq.com terms, read October 26, 2026). That covers all of Saturday and Sunday and federal holidays.
MAP Communications prices nights like days, "whether those calls are handled during the day or after hours" (mapcommunications.com, read October 7, 2026). Its terms add a holiday charge: "Holiday Fee - This is a flat fee charged on seven major holidays for the recovery of additional labor expense incurred on holidays." (mapcommunications.com/terms, read October 7, 2026) The amount and the seven holidays are not published.
What 24/7 costs with your own staff
One receptionist cannot cover 168 hours. Private-industry workers average 26 days of paid holidays, vacation and sick leave a year, per the BLS National Compensation Survey for March 2026. Backfilling that leave across every hour of every day takes 4.7 full-time staff on our arithmetic, against 1.1 for a 40-hour week.
On the BLS median wage for receptionists, $18.27 an hour in May 2025, plus employer benefits and turnover, that staff costs $20,526 a month, or $246,318 a year. It does not change with call volume: at 13 calls a day it works out to $52.63 a call.

The in-house row is full 24/7 cover, 168 hours a week with paid leave backfilled, on the BLS median wage plus employer benefits and turnover. Vendor rows: cheapest published plan plus overage at 3-minute calls over 30 days; Goodcall bills per unique caller, and we count every call as a new caller. How we price.
At 13 calls a day, every service in this table with a published price costs less than the in-house cover. Ruby, the dearest live service in our tables, costs $3,970.50; the in-house cover costs 5.2 times that, and 9.2 times Posh. The full model, wage by state and the 40-hour case, is on hire vs AI receptionist and receptionist coverage hours.
An AI receptionist has no shifts to staff. Goodcall, the least of them at 13 calls a day, costs $129; the in-house cover costs 159.1 times that.
Who answers at 2am
The price is the same at night; who picks up can differ.
Abby Connect closes its people on holidays. Its terms: "Standard human receptionist answering is unavailable during the following U.S. holidays" (Abby terms, read October 26, 2026). The list is Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas and New Year's Day. Its free-trial page says you decide whether nights and holidays "go to human receptionists, to the AI Receptionist, or to both" (read October 26, 2026).
Smith.ai stays open. Its help center: "Smith.ai is not closed for any holiday." (docs.smith.ai, read October 7, 2026)
Ruby answers, but its office does not. "Support staff (Customer Happiness, Billing, Sales, etc.) are not available during our extended hours." (Ruby help center, read October 26, 2026)
Posh says "Our receptionists are available to answer your calls 24/7/365." (posh.com/faqs, read October 26, 2026) Its Spanish guarantee covers weekday hours only; see bilingual virtual receptionist.
After hours only: a virtual receptionist for nights and weekends
If you answer by day and forward at 5pm, you buy a smaller plan, and the smallest plan sets your floor.
Smith.ai puts the case for its unit plainly: "The great thing about per-call pricing is that it doesn't matter if we answer calls for you 24/7 or 2 hours a day" (smith.ai/pricing/receptionists, read October 26, 2026). At a per-minute service an after-hours minute costs a daytime minute too; the difference is the plan minimum.
| Service | 20 after-hours calls a month | 50 after-hours calls a month |
|---|---|---|
| ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus, before its after-hours charge | $53.95 | $135 |
| MAP Communications | $131.20 | $211.50 |
| Specialty Answering Service | $136.40 | $231 |
| Posh | $152 | $322.50 |
| Abby Connect | $196.90 | $493 |
| Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists | $300 | $530 |
| Ruby | $304 | $620 |
At 20 after-hours calls a month, ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus costs the least of the ten services in our first table and Ruby the most. ReceptionHQ's $0.30 surcharge on each of those calls does not change that order. Smith.ai's smallest plan is $300/month for 30 calls.
Which option fits which 24/7 need
Best for a few after-hours calls a month: ReceptionHQ ReceptionistPlus
At 20 calls it costs $53.95 before its after-hours surcharge of $0.30 a call, the least of the ten services in our first table. It may not fit if most calls need a transfer: its terms charge for each one.
Best for a person on every holiday: Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists
Smith.ai says it closes on no holiday, and prices a call the same at any hour. At 100 calls it costs $915. It may not fit if you want to leave quickly: its terms ask 30 days' notice before the end of a cycle.
Best for people by day and AI overnight: Abby Connect
An AI minute uses half an Abby Minute, so nights handed to its AI cost half the daytime rate. Priced all human, 100 calls cost $898. It may not fit if a person must answer on Thanksgiving or Christmas.
Best for a staffed desk by day: one hire plus a night service
One hire on the BLS median wage costs $4,399 a month and covers the desk by day. Nights at 20 calls a month cost $131.20 at MAP Communications.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a 24/7 virtual receptionist cost?
The live virtual receptionists in our table answer around the clock for $260 to $1,160 a month at 100 three-minute calls (prices checked October 26, 2026). Abby Connect costs $898 at that volume, with its AI answering when its people are off shift. ReceptionHQ adds a per-call charge after hours and MAP Communications a holiday fee.
Do virtual receptionists charge more for after-hours calls?
Ruby, Posh, Smith.ai and Abby Connect publish that they do not, and so do Moneypenny, Specialty Answering Service and MAP Communications. ReceptionHQ's terms add a per-call surcharge outside 5am to 7pm Phoenix time on weekdays, all weekend and on federal holidays. MAP Communications' terms add a flat holiday fee on seven holidays, amount not published.
How many receptionists does 24/7 coverage take?
Covering 168 hours a week with paid leave backfilled takes 4.7 full-time receptionists on our arithmetic from BLS leave data. On the BLS median wage with benefits and turnover, that costs $20,526 a month, whatever the call volume.
Can I use a virtual receptionist only after hours?
Yes. Every service in our table answers whatever hours you forward to it. At 20 three-minute calls a month, MAP Communications costs $131.20 and Ruby $304. Smith.ai's smallest plan covers 30 calls, so fewer calls cost the same.
Do virtual receptionists answer on holidays?
Smith.ai says it is not closed for any holiday, and Ruby, Posh and Abby Connect include holidays at no extra charge. Abby Connect's terms close its human receptionists on seven U.S. holidays, including Thanksgiving and Christmas, and its AI answers those hours unless you configure 24/7 coverage.
Is an AI receptionist cheaper for after-hours calls?
At 13 three-minute calls a day, AI receptionists cost $129 to $695.30 a month and answer around the clock at that price. The live virtual receptionists in our table cost $990 to $3,970.50 at the same volume. An AI receptionist takes messages and books, but no person is on the line.
How these numbers were made
Every vendor price on this page was read from the vendor's own pricing page on the date in its Source cell and saved as a dated capture. Monthly costs use each vendor's cheapest published plan for the volume plus its published overage, at 3-minute calls. The in-house figure uses the BLS median wage for receptionists over 2,080 paid hours (paid leave included), other employer benefit costs and turnover, each from the BLS release named below. Vendors that hide prices stay in the tables as quote only. We do not test answering quality and publish no ratings.

Changes to these prices
- Upfirst: cancellation notice recorded as none. Its pricing FAQ says "You can cancel, upgrade, or downgrade anytime, no questions asked," the same strength as other cancel-anytime terms. Its setup-fee summary now reads "None stated": no page says there is no fee. No price changed.
- My AI Front Desk: the 1,000 monthly overage credits its pricing page lists as included ("Extra credits you get each month in case you go over your included usage") now count as 40 included minutes, so Business-in-a-Box covers 240 minutes before the $0.25 rate applies (was 200).
- Phonely: its Professional plan card says 650 minutes and its comparison table 750; the card is used. When two plans tie on their lowest cost, the one with the narrower range is chosen, so Phonely at 300 calls a month prices on Professional alone.
- My AI Front Desk: billing-term summaries (billing unit, rounding, time billed beyond the call, spam, setup fee, contract, trial) added from the vendor-data billing-terms and contracts files and their captures. No price changed.
